6 Ways to Save Money on Hotels

You can save money by looking at prices on multiple websites, haggling, and being open to different locations.

It’s easy to spend all of your travel money on full-price lodging. Find out where to stay for less money so you can use that savings toward more enjoyable activities.

In order to receive the lowest possible rate on your hotel stay, there are a few extra tricks you should know about before making your reservation.

  1. Get in touch with the hotel on your own; locate it online, then give them a call and request a price match (they usually will since it saves them on commission). If they are a big global brand, the main benefit of booking directly is that you can only earn loyalty points and status when you book directly. If you love travel hacking, don’t book their rooms anywhere else!

  1. To save money, look into membership discounts like AAA or AARP. Anyone can join the AARP, which is a fun fact. I’m a member. They have great travel perks (including deals on hotels and British Airways flights). It’s worth the money to join.

  1. Use Mr.Rebates or Rakuten. If the best price is on a big booking site like Booking.com, Expedia, or Hotels.com, go through Mr.Rebates or Rakuten. You’ll get 1-4% cash back if you use their links. It’s a small way to save more money, which can add up over time.

  1. Check out HotelTonight. This app is great for booking a hotel at the last minute. If you can wait until after 4 p.m. on the day of your trip, you can find hotels that are up to 50% cheaper.

  1. Try SnapTravel. This site is best for finding hotels in the U.S. SnapTravel sends hotel deals right to your phone or Facebook account. You just tell them when you’ll be there and where, and they’ll send you the best deals. With them, you can save up to 50% on the cost of a hotel. They are a helpful service that doesn’t get much attention and has saved me a lot of money. Google usually shows them in its search results, but sometimes it doesn’t, so it’s best to look for them yourself.

  1. Join the Booking.com and Hotels.com loyalty programs. After 10 bookings on Hotels.com, you get a free room, and Booking.com members get 10% off bookings. They helped a lot, for sure. Before you book with them, you should join their loyalty programs.

  1. Get gift cards at a discount. Hotel gift cards can be used to book major hotel chains. Check out Giftcardgranny.com to find discounted gift cards, which you can then use to book your hotel. (Buying gift cards also helps you earn points and move up in status.)

  1. Use Roomer to buy someone else’s reservation – When people can’t go on a trip and can’t cancel the reservation, hotels put these rooms on Roomer and sell them at a discount so they don’t lose the money. This is a website I’ve never used, but I’ve heard good things about it.

Prices for hotels are much less likely to change than prices for flights. People spend hours looking at hotel websites and days keeping track of prices, but I wouldn’t do that. I would take no more than 30 minutes to book a hotel.

Just follow the steps above to find a cheap hotel by using my favorite (and what research has shown to be the best) hotel booking websites. This will help you get a good deal and start enjoying your trip faster.

1. Look at multiple sites and deals

Costs can vary a lot depending on how you book your reservation.

Start with sites like Kayak, Expedia, or Priceline.com to get an idea of the hotels in your desired area, but don’t rely on them to give you the whole picture. Go ahead and do your own research on those hotels. Look for discount codes and perks like free breakfast, parking, or WiFi.

And don’t forget to check the hotel’s website. Some chains say that if you book through their website, you’ll get the best rate.

2. Talk about your price

Once you know how things work, pick a few places you like and call them. Tell the hotel the price you found on another site and see if they can beat it.

    3. Look for last-minute deals

Apps like HotelTonight and One:Night are designed to help people find cheap hotel rooms at the last minute. Sites like Hotels.com and Hotwire also have deals for the next day or two.

Booking at the last minute doesn’t always work, though. When a lot of people want to travel, like for a holiday or a conference, prices can go up.

      4. Think about other places to stay

You can stay somewhere else besides a hotel. Sites like Airbnb and HomeAway let you rent a room, an apartment, or a whole house.

Hostels are a great option for travelers on a budget, especially if they are going somewhere outside of the U.S. You won’t have to share a room with a bunch of 19-year-olds, so don’t worry (unless you want to). Most hostels have a few private rooms with bathrooms attached.

        5. Choose a different area

Most of the time, it costs more to stay in the middle of a city. Save money by staying outside of the city center, but close to public transportation so you can easily get downtown.

          6. Use the people you know

Seniors, people who work for the government, students, people in the military, and AAA members may be able to get cheaper hotel rates when they travel. Ask the hotel before you book, or check sites like AARP, Military.com, and AAA.com for deals.
